The Jack Russell Terrier is a small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting. It is principally white-bodied and smooth, rough or broken-coated but can be any colour.

The Jack Russell is frequently confused with the Parson Russell terrier (see the American Kennel Club) and the Russell terrier, which is a shorter-legged, stockier variety. (Within the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the “Russell terrier” is also known as “Jack Russell terrier”.) The term “Jack Russell” is also commonly misapplied to other small white terriers. The Jack Russell is a broad type, with a size range of 10–15 inches (25–38 cm). The Parson Russell is limited only to a middle range with a standard size of 12–14 inches (30–36 cm), while the Russell terrier is smaller at 8–12 inches (20–30 cm). Each breed has different physical proportions according to the standards of their breed clubs.

Jack Russells are an energetic breed that rely on a high level of exercise and stimulation and are relatively free from serious health complaints. Originating from dogs bred and used by Reverend John Russell in the early 19th century, from whom the breed takes its name, the Jack Russell has similar origins to the modern Fox terrier. It has gone through several changes over the years, corresponding to different use and breed standards set by kennel clubs. Recognition by kennel clubs for the Jack Russell breed has been opposed by the breed’s parent societies – which resulted in the breeding and recognition of the Parson Russell terrier. Jack Russells have appeared many times in film, television, and print – with several historical dogs of note.

  1. I got myself an non-adoptable shelter dog, a Parson Russell terrier. Since I have a dog trainer's certificate and studied dog behavior I was able to pursuade the shelter. He had bitten his owner and I mean really bitten her… He is four years old, behaves more like a 4 month old puppy. First day he attacked my mother twice, every time I was in another room. But I soon discovered that the dog was reactive and not really agressive and he was abused by his former owner. Got him in August 2020,now October 2020,he is so sweet, aggression is gone, but it took a lot of work, long walks lot of playing and he had to get used to other dogs and people. He is the love of my life now, just an amazing playful hunter…

  2. My doggie can’t hunt her left eye is white.

I love my jet sally ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  3. I'm amazed that people my age doesn't remember Wishbone. So my face lit up when I saw him on this countdown. Thank You for adding him. He is the reason why I want a JRT.

  4. All this kennel club and breed snobbery nonsense isn't for the Jack Russells, they are their own dog and I hate that this overshadows the dogs themselves. All three of the Jacks I have had over the years have either come from through rescues and one I inherited when my father passed away (and he was from a family home where their two dogs inadvertently got a bit too frisky). Kennel clubs and breed snobs can get stuffed.

  5. In the UK, a jack Russell (they are exactly the same as when they were created, to go down fox holes) has short legs, while a parsons Russell terrier has longer legs and therefore is taller and generally bigger.

  6. We have a female Parsons Jack Russel Terrier called Bonnie and she‘s already 16 years old.
She‘s still happy but blind on one eye and deaf. But she is playful, happy, STILL energetic but she hates almost all Social Contacts with other Dogs but really HATES Cats lol.
I love her really much ????
